I have had a few requests for more information about the wine estates whose wines are featured in my posts, so I decided to kick-off with Land’s End. Please let me know what you think.

The Land’s End range consists of 4 wines, and is part of the Du Toitskloof Winery’s portfolio.

The winery itself is located in Rawsonville, close to the Huguenot Tunnel in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Visser de Wet, a founder member, sold 18 ha of land to the 6 wine farmers who, in 1962, initiated the Du Toitskloof Wines co-operative.

In 1996 a group of friends, realised that there was a gap in the market for vineyards to be planted along the raw, light-filled Cape South Coast, including Agulhas. This led to the establishment of Land’s End Wines By Charles Hopkins, Pieter Ferreira, Johan Wiese and Hein Koegelenberg.

They were spot-on because the wines that came out of the area made waves through the industry for their unmistakable saltiness, depth of flavour and distinct varietal characteristics

Twenty years later, in 2016, Dirk Human of the Black Oystercatcher told his friend, Francois Botha from the Breedekloof area about the success story of Land’s End Wines, and that it was on the market.

Botha called Shawn Thomson, the winemaker at Du Toitskloof Winery, who immediately bought in with the idea. Botha then assumed the position of chairman and appointed Leon Dippenaar as viticulturist for the project and the wheels started rolling.

The result was that Land’s End became part of the Du Toitskloof portfolio, and produced and bottled two tiers of Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah namely Land’s End Cape Agulhas Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, and Land’s End Cape South Coast Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.

The Cape Agulhas wines are produced from grapes that is only sourced from the Agulhas and Elim area, and the Cape South Coast wines’ grapes are sourced from across the Cape South Coast, including Agulhas.

Land’s End Wines form part of The Agulhas Wine Triangle which was established in 2019 to showcase the wines from the area. The members fit geographically within a triangle and includes amongst others the Black Oystercatcher Wines, Strandveld Wines, and Bruce Jack Wines. This is for sure a must visit area to experience their unique wines on offer.
